We are at the AAAI/ACM AIES 2025 in Madrid!

The AAAI/ACM Conference on AI, Ethics, and Society (AIES) is a young, interdisciplinary conference on the social and ethical aspects of artificial intelligence organized by Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI). Despite its short history, it is supported by renowned sponsors such as Google, IBM and Lenovo.
We will be presenting a paper in a poster session at the conference. Prof. Christian Janiesch and Alexander van der Staay will be on site in Madrid from October 20 to 22.
Together with Dr. Raphael Fischer, Katharina Poitz and Prof. Thomas Liebig from the Lamarr Institute and Dr. Magdalena Wischnewski from the Research Center for Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence, the idea of so-called AI labels - comparable to the EU energy labels for household appliances - was examined in an interview study with AI users, developers and experts.
The participants were largely positive about the concept and saw numerous practical applications in their day-to-day work. For example, AI labels could support model selection or facilitate communication with less tech-savvy employees.
There was also an interesting nudging effect: after reviewing the AI labels, many developers paid more attention to the energy consumption of their models and questioned an optimization focused purely on accuracy.
The study also raises important questions about the implementation and dissemination of AI labels - in particular, whether they should be awarded by a central testing body or established as part of a self-labeling process. This question will be further explored in future studies.
