Pauline Speckmann receives the Vinton G. Cerf Best Student-Authored Paper Award

Pauline Speckmann was awarded the Vinton G. Cerf Best Student-Authored Paper Award at the International Conference on Design Science Research in Information Systems and Technology (DESRIST) 2025. The conference took place in Jamaica this year, and the award was presented by Prof. Dr. Jan vom Brocke during the conference dinner.
The winning paper is entitled "Interactive Explainable Intelligent Systems: Requirements, Design Principles, and Prototypical Implementation" (DOI: 10.1007/978-3-031-93979-2_4) and was co-authored with Mario Nadj and Christian Janiesch. The paper presents design principles (DPs) for interactive, explainable intelligent systems that aim in particular to strengthen user agency. Five different user groups are considered and first classifications of relevant reference methods are proposed. By instantiating the principles in a prototype and subsequently evaluating it, valuable practical insights were gained.
Also at DESRIST, Alexander van der Staay presented his joint paper with Ralf Fischer, Martin Wischnewski, Katharina Poitz and Christian Janiesch entitled "Reflective Design Theorizing with User Interviews: A Case Study for AI Energy Labels" (DOI: 10.1007/978-3-031-93979-2_5). The paper extends the methodology of Design Science Research (DSR) and deals with the use of user interviews and grounded theory in the extraction of design knowledge from completed IT artifacts that were originally developed without DSR reference. The methodological contribution is demonstrated using energy labels for AI models, which are intended to communicate important properties such as accuracy or energy consumption in an understandable way.
We congratulate Pauline Speckmann on this recognition and are delighted with the commitment of both young researchers from our chair at this renowned international conference!
