AI as a game changer in retail

In its issue of 25 July 2025, Lebensmittel Zeitung spoke to Prof. Dr. Christian Janiesch about the use of artificial intelligence in consumer goods retail. The holder of the Chair of Enterprise Computing emphasizes that AI is no longer a dream of the future: "Artificial intelligence is already a global practice."
In the interview, Janiesch explains how retail companies are already using AI today - for example in the design of images in brochures, as was recently the case at Aldi Süd - and what potential exists far beyond this. He believes that AI-based planning solutions are particularly promising. They not only help to increase efficiency, but also promote sustainability by reducing surpluses.
In addition to opportunities such as intelligent data analysis and a personalized customer approach, Janiesch also points out challenges: insufficient data quality, possible misleading generic content and the acceptance of new technologies in companies.
His conclusion: AI will fundamentally change retail - and those who adapt to developments early on can secure decisive competitive advantages.
